I don't agree with your definition/explanation of 'evolution'. You don't stress enough the fact that it is NOT directed. Selection is truly random, subject to the whims of nature/environment.

I must confess to being extremely skeptical that any of the biochemcial processes discussed here, including Christian de Duve's marvelously speculative article can, in fact, actually bring into existence a self-replicating entity. This is huge problem in my estimation. We have no real beginning to life.
