ANNOTATION: Mental energy - Social entropy
Human fitness may be primarily attributed to a complex brain, which supplies
mental energy to our cultural environment and the means to exploit energy resources
to reduce entropy in our physical environment. We expend intellectual energy by
choice, not automatically as heat from a can of sterno. If, like the mass of humanity,
we decide to reduce our input of mental energy, we should expect an increase in
social entropy. Likewise, if we misdirect mental energy we may increase "personal fitness"
(a smart, but corrupt, CEO) at the expense of social fitness (stockholders and employees).
What is the net entropy in that situation? It seems clear throughout human history, certainly
today, that net social chaos is inversely proportional to net human mental output. Can a
small group of providers of high volume and high quality (meaning what...?) mental energy
compensate for the input of large quantities of low quality mental energy or for the minimal
output of any mental energy characteristic of most humans? Or, what is the net effect
of the manipulation of those humans who expend little or no mental energy by those humans who
expend large quantities of low quality mental energy? What is quality mental energy?
